City of Stillwater

History- Stillwater was founded in 1843 and at that time, it's name "proposed by John McKusick was adopted." The name Stillwater came from the stillness of the water in the lake. On March 4, 1854, Stillwater was incorporated and the township was organized in May of 1858.

In 1839, Joseph R. Brown was the earliest settler who came planning a townsite that he named Dahkotah. Stillwater was the county seat of St. Croix County, Wisconsin Territory and continued to be during the time that it was renamed Still Water, which was the name of the post office that was established in 1846. The post office was then taken into Minnesota Territory in 1849, then becoming the county seat of Washington County. Stillwater is the oldest county seat in the present state boundaries.

Stillwater has many nicknames including the "Birthplace of Minnesota," and "The Queen of the St. Croix" because of its booming lumber industry. Stillwater was also known as "Prison City" because of the huge territorial prison built here in the mid-1800s.

Because of Stillwater's rich history, it is also known for it's finest examples of 19th-century residential architecture in the state. Many of the homes were built in the Queen Anne, Second Empire, and Stick styles of the 1800s as well as the Prairie style of the 1900s. Many of the older homes have recently been restored and made into bed and breakfasts.

Shopping- Stillwater is currently home to a wide selection of restaurants and antique shops overlooking the St. Croix River. When exploring Stillwater, you will notice parts of the territorial prison, including the Warden's home, antique shops in the Isaac Staples Mill, shops, taverns, offices, restaurants along Main Street that was once a rooming house, railroad building, saloon, brewery, or a theater.

Recreation- Stillwater is the perfect place for recreational activities with the St. Croix River located on Stillwater's waterfront. Stillwater offers 222 acres of parkland and is currently continuing it's expansion to enhance it's parks. There's an effort and a plan to continue providing a continuous connection trail system in all new developments for the community.
