St. Louis Park, Minnesota
City of St. Louis Park

History- St. Louis Park's name was selected instead of "Elmwood" because of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad. The word "Park" was added on the chance that the village (consisting of 45 families) would be confused with St. Louis, Missouri. The founders linked the name to the railroad because they believed that the railroad would help transform the village into a trading center and become an industry. In 1886 and 1887, five businessmen from Minneapolis created the St. Louis Park Land and Improvement Company and platted three subdivisions. In 1890, Thomas Barlow Walker, a lumber baron, and a group of wealthy Minneapolis industrialists incorporated two companies (Minneapolis Land and Investment Company) to focus industrial development in Minneapolis. Walker's company began developing St. Louis Park for industrial commercial and residential use. By 1893, the downtown area of St. Louis Park had three hotels and many newly arrived companies surrounded the downtown. In 1899, St. Louis Park became home to the world's first concrete, tubular grain elevator and provided an alternative to combustible wooden elevators. By the early 1900s, residents held jobs in Minneapolis and viewed St. Louis Park as a residential suburb. St. Louis Park evolved into a residential suburb because streetcar lines created easy access to Minneapolis jobs. The population was scattered throughout St. Louis Park making it difficult to support a single central commercial area. Today, most of St. Louis Park is developed and much of the focus has shifted from building infrastructure to improving it. St. Louis Park is a recognized leader in redevelopment aimed at creating "livable" communities, areas that are less reliant on cars and offer a mix of housing, shopping, entertainment and jobs within a short distance of one another.

Shopping- Many residents of St. Louis Park go to Knollwood Mall off of highway 169 and highway 7 or drive to Ridgedale Mall in Minnetonka or Southdale Mall in Edina.

Recreation- St. Louis Park's 150-acres of nature preserve is devoted to passive outdoor enjoyment, environmental education and wildlife observation. There are many biking and walking trails in St. Louis Park that connect it to downtown Minneapolis. Oak Hill Park Winter Recreation Area is a premier winter recreation area located at Oak Hill Park and Rhode Island Avenue. The rinks and warming house are always wonderful places to spend some time with the family. The St. Louis Park Recreation Center offers many activities for the whole family that kids of all ages will enjoy.
