City of Shoreview

History- Shoreview was once inhabited by Dakota and Ojibwe Indians. In 1837, the land lying between the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers, including what is now Shoreview, was ceded to the United States Government by the Ojibwe. In February 1850, Socrates A. Thompson was accompanied by an Indian friend and left St. Paul in search of a good location for farming. Thompson was the first white person to settle on land that is now within the boundaries of Shoreview. Shoreview was once part of Mounds View Township. The name came from a range of hills running through the center. Mounds View Township was organized on May 11, 1858, the same day that Minnesota became a state. On March 14, 1957, a group of citizens presented a petition to the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners that called for the incorporation of the Village of Shoreview, which would separate Shoreview from Mounds View Township. Shoreview was officially incorporated on April 23, 1957 with Kenneth Hanold being the first Mayor of Shoreview. After Shoreview changed forms of government, it became a city on January 1, 1974.

Recreation- Shoreview has been strongly committed to the importance of health and wellness by providing quality recreation and fitness opportunities to their residents. Recreation programs range from group fitness to swimming lessons as well as youth and adult athletics. The Shoreview Community Center is a hub of activity with water activities at the Tropics Indoor Water Park, a whirlpool, cardiovascular and strength training facilities, full basketball and volleyball courts and an indoor walking/running track.
