History- Shakopee’s first recorded history was not written down in a book, rather it was written in rock layers. During the glacial period four great glaciers moved over this area. When the fourth and final glacier melted, the Minnesota River and Glacial Lake Agassiz came into being. Glacial Lake was larger than all the Great Lakes together, but as it retracted, it carved the Minnesota River as its outlet, digging a path toward the Mississippi River basin. Shakopee’s history records indicate that two large Indian nations were located in the Minnesota state region. The Dakota, also known as the Sioux, Indian nation had three large divisions, and the Santee Indians resided in this area as early as the 1600s. The Dakota were challenged in the 1700s by the westward migration of the Chippewa, and were eventually pushed toward the south and west. Shakopee’s records indicate skirmishes between the Chippewa and members of Chief Shakopee’s village from the Minnesota River during 1768 and 1775. By 1839, the village was located east of the present site of Shakopee. Teenatahotonwa (“village of the prairie”) as Shakopee was commonly called, was a village of summer bark lodges, winter tipis, and corn fields with the river serving as natural protection from the Chippewa to the north.

Shopping- Shakopee is a major regional entertainment center. Area attractions include: Valley Fair, Mystic Lake Casino, Dakota Country Casino, Canterbury Park, Murphy’s Landing, the Renaissance Festival and Raceway Park. Shakopee attracts over 4 million tourists annually.
