History-
Rosemount was originally inhabited by the Lower Band Mdewanton of the
Sioux tribe. Chief Little Crow (the leader of the New Ulm Indian uprising)
signed a treaty at Pilot Knob, Mendota, turning the land over to the
government on August 5, 1851. In 1853, the first settlers, William and
Walter Strathern and C. H. Carr came from Scotland by way of New York
to stake their claim. Many Irish Catholic immigrants soon followed.
There was an increased number of settlers, so there came a need for
a community organization. Settlers met at the home of Thomas Dowd for
the first township meeting on May 11, 1858, which coincidentally was
the same day that Minnesota became a state. In
January of 1971, the village and township of Rosemont merged. Rosemount
became a statutory city in January of 1975, using the basic form of
government (a mayor, city council, city administrator, and city clerk).
Shopping-
Residents of Rosemount tend to use Burnsville Shopping Center as their
main mall for their shopping needs. Other than Burnsville, Rosemount
residents use other major malls and/or stores in nearby cities or towns.
Recreation-
Rosemont’s
Park and Recreation Department maintains five parks in the city. Many
of these parks offer programs, such as adult sports, Tiny Tots Pre-school,
T-ball, field trips, summer camps, youth and adult art classes, Rosettes,
senior adult programs, ice skating lessons, babysitting classes, and
special events. Rosemount’s community center offers a banquet
room for up to 300 people, an auditorium which seats 350 people, a regulations
size gymnasium and meeting rooms of various sizes. The multi-purpose
arena is an indoor regulation-size ice rink which keeps this popular
arena on a busy schedule. It is often the site of hockey and broomball
practice, games or tournaments. The arena also serves the location of
choice for figure skating programs and ice skating lessons for people
of all ability levels.
