History- Until 1851, Orono and the region around it remained largely unexplored by white settlers because the Dakota Indians’ had an effort to keep Lake Minnetonka a secret. Orono Township was organized in 1889, having previously been south of Medina. The Orono name adopted from the township and village of the same name in Maine, which was suggested by citizens who came from Maine to Minnesota.
Shopping- Orono shopping is scarce. Most Orono shopping is found in communities such as Wayzata or Long Lake which are close.
