History- Medina was part of the “Big Woods” which was a region of hardwood forests, broken only by lakes, streams and marshes. In 1853, the Traverse de Sioux Treaty opened up the region to white settlers. The first settlers arrived in Medina in 1855. In 1858, the County Commissioner gave the city an official name “Hamburg Township.” Local residents preferred the name “Medina” after the Arabian holy city. In 1858, 37 residents met and changed the name to Medina after an unanimous vote.
Shopping- Medina's shopping needs are met through neighboring communities such as Plymouth, Wayzata and Minnetonka. The closet mall is Ridgedale located in Minnetonka.
Recreation- Medina has many hobby farms giving Medina a rural atmosphere yet close to the neighboring cities and Minneapolis. Baker National Park Reserve is found in Medina. This 2,000 acre reserve occupies approximately one-fifth of Medina's land. Baker Park has plenty of biking and hiking trails, adjoining the shores of Lake Independence. Baker park on Lake Independence has many activities, a swimming area, over-night camping and huge playground. Baker Park in Medina is also home to an 18-hole golf course.
