History- Maplewood was incorporated as a village in 1957. Originally it was not much but farmland lying on the outskirts of St. Paul near North St. Paul. In the last 30 years, Maplewood has earned an identity separate from St. Paul. Maplewood is the headquarters for 3M company which is an employer of 12,000 people.
Shopping- Shopping in Maplewood can be done at the Maplewood Mall, which is located on White Bear Avenue two blocks east of Interstate 694. Within the Maplewood Mall you will find Marshal Fields, Mervyn's, Sears and Kohls.
Recreation- Maplewood has many recreational activities. The Maplewood Community Center is a 90,000 square-foot facility sitting on 11-acres and is located south on Highway 36 and White Bear Avenue. The Maplewood Community Center hosts an Aquatic center, fitness facility, gymnasium and a performing arts theatre. There are two regional parks in the city, Battle Creek and Keller. The Maplewood Nature Center offers environmental programs for children and adults. The City of Maplewood has decided to leave one-third of the cities acreage open for parks, wetlands and recreational space.
