City of Hopkins

History- Hopkins’ history began in 1852 with the first settlers, however the roots of the town began in 1887 when the building of the Minneapolis Threshing Machine Company (later named Minneapolis Moline). The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners received a petition signed by 41 residents asking for the village to be formed. The village of West Minneapolis was incorporated after the election. This village was comprised of three square miles and has been enlarged through annexation to it’s present size of four square miles. The city of Hopkins was named in honor of Harley H. Hopkins who was among its first homesteaders and was the communities first postmaster. Chester L. Hopkins was the first mayor of the city (Harley Hopkins’ son). On January 1, 1948, the village became a city upon adoption of the council-city manager charter.

Shopping- Many of Hopkins’ residents drive to either Ridgedale Mall in Minnetonka or to Southdale Mall in Edina for department store shopping. However, Main Street in Hopkins has many small stores that offer a small town feel of shopping.

Recreation- Hopkins offers 18 parks that are fully maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department of Hopkins. Overpass Skate Park offers children a chance to improve their skateboarding moves. Shady Oak Beach is a highly populated beach during the summer time on those scorching hot days with lifeguards on duty during the open times of the beach. Many of the parks offer athletic fields (baseball/softball, football, soccer), picnic areas, and restrooms.
