City of Golden Valley

History- Golden Valley's history as to how it got it's name has a few documented stories to fields of flowers or Irish namesakes which are not attributed to any source. However, if you go by the oral history (like the one given here), Golden Valley was named for the glimmering fields of wheat that once swept across it. Golden Valley's history dates back to 1853 when the Moser family arrived, followed by the Varner family in 1854. William Varner was out looking for a site to build his home and eventually came upon “a hill so high that he thought it was a mountain. He climbed the hill and looking down he could see the whole valley lush and green dotted with golden daffodils,” then said, “This is my valley, my golden valley.” Since then the name stuck. Golden Valley, Minnesota is now known for the international home of General Mills.

Shopping- Golden Valley's shopping centers are located on the east and west side of Winnetka Avenue and on the north side of Highway 55. Ridgedale mall is less than 5 miles from Golden Valley.

Recreation- Golden Valley has more than 1,035 acres dedicated to parks and open space. The city maintains nearly 47 miles of trails as well as numerous ball fields, courts, and activity areas.

The city of Golden Valley has two main golf courses, Golden Valley Country Club which has a championship golf course, and Brookview Public Golf Course and recreation area. At Brookview, there are many trees to sit under for a nice sunny day picnic, a big playground for the kids to have hours of fun on, athletic fields, and many walking trails.
