History- The name “Chaska” is derived from a Dakota word often given as a name to the first born male child. Chaska's history reflects the influence of the Native American culture. In 1769, it was believed that the first inhabitants were the Mound Builders, whose ancient communities are marked by mounds in City Square. The Dakota (commonly known as the Sioux) later were the primary nation in this region known as the Big Woods. Chaska has been a small town throughout it's history since 1852. Chaska's main industrial base was the manufacturing of bricks that were shipped by boat to St. Paul. In the early 1900s came the processing of beet sugar and other agricultural products, such as flour making, butter making, canning of peas, corn and tomatoes, and curing of sauerkraut and pickles. The City Council recognizes “Chaska's strategic advantage by preserving its small town atmosphere.”
Shopping- Chaska offers a small town feel with it's shopping, with stores on Main street for fun window shopping trips.
Recreation- Chaska is recognized as the site of the world-class Hazeltine National Golf Club, which was the scene of the 1991 U.S. Open Golf Championship and the 2002 PGA Championship. Chaska is also home of the Chaska Community Center. The Chaska Community Center is a place where swimming, skating, indoor playgrounds, basketball, volleyball, exercising, weight lifting, video games, and dining in an old fashion malt shop are things to do. This community center has been recognized nationally by Athletic Business Magazine as one of the 10 best community centers in the nation. It also received the “Excellence in Aquatics Award” in 1994 from the National Park and Recreation Association. Chaska Community Center is a place where boredom is never an option or seen.
