City of Brooklyn Park

History- Brooklyn Park was part of the Fort Snelling Reserve in the early 19th century, under the protection of a treaty with the Dakota Indians. In early 1852, territorial legislature set in motion the law that organized Hennepin County. That spring, the first claims to land in the new territory that would become Brooklyn Township were staked. At that time, there were only trails forged by the Ojibwe Indians who lived in the area . Settlers from Michigan staked claim to this area in late 1853 and early 1854 and named it Brooklyn Township, after their home territory of Brooklyn Michigan. Brooklyn Township was originally an area larger than the Brooklyn Park/Brooklyn Center of today. In 1860, two tiers of sections were cut off in the south, forming the towns of Brooklyn Center and Crystal Lake.

Shopping- Brooklyn Park is very close to the Brookdale Mall for all your shopping needs. Brooklyn Park offers an array of restaurants as well as specialty stores.

Recreation- Brooklyn Park’s residents take pleasure in safe, friendly neighborhoods, beautiful parks and trails, down-home activities and easy access to shopping centers and restaurants. There are rivers and streams winding throughout the community and lakes and ponds dotting the landscape with plenty to do outdoors. Brooklyn Park’s parks and recreation department maintains an impressive array of facilities including recreation centers, outdoor parks, trails and golf courses.
