History- Apple Valley was originally a small farming community named “Lebanon.” It exploded as a result of a housing boom that began in the early 1960s. When residents voted in 1968 to incorporate the town, they also chose to change its name to Apple Valley. The name Apple Valley came from housing developer Orrin Thompson, who put an apple tree on every single lot. Shopping- Apple Valley shopping revolves around County Road 42 and Cedar Avenue. Stores include Target Greatland, Menards, and Frank's Nursery. Cub Foods and Rainbow Foods can meet all of your grocery shopping needs.
Recreation- Apple Valley has an extensive parks and recreation system including 790-acres of park land and 46 parks and is home of the Minnesota Zoo and IMAX theater. The Community center located on Hayes Avenue has all your sporting needs, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, etc. The Apple Valley Family Aquatic Center has an 18,000 square foot pool with water slides, drop slides, and a sand and water playground. Red Wood Park consists of a 12-acre park with an outdoor pool and areas to play tennis, softball, and horseshoes.
