Burnsville 2030 Comprehensive Plan Update

The City of Burnsville is in the process of updating its Comprehensive Plan, a long range strategic document that will assist the City in planning for the next 20 years. The plan will address key areas such as:

Transportation, Transit, and Infrastructure

Natural Resources, Parks and Open Space

Growth, Land Use, and Economic Development

Housing

Intergovernmental Coordination

Why plan?
The Metropolitan Council requires all metropolitan cities and counties to have a comprehensive plan, and determines the basic information that the plan must address. Plans are updated every 10 years following the census. Burnsville’s last plan update was prepared in 1998 – Burnsville 2000 Comprehensive Plan.How Can I Get Involved?
There will be a variety of ways for the public to get involved throughout the Burnsville 2030 Comprehensive Plan Update process. The first opportunities are to attend the four public open house forums planned over the next 16 months. The public can also attend the City Council worksessions and Planning Commission meetings and public hearings. In addition, all of the reports prepared for the plan and the minutes from the advisory panel meetings will be available on the city’s website for review and comment. Public comments are always welcome and input can be sent via a Feedback Form.

How Will the Plan be Prepared?
The City began the planning process in 2006 with a community visioning project. The next phase is to draft the Burnsville 2030 Comprehensive Plan Update document to set forth the goals, policies, plans and the proposed methods and tools to implement the plan. The Planning Commission is responsible to prepare and update the Comprehensive Plan. An Advisory Panel consisting of 26 members of standing boards/commission and volunteers from the Burnsville for the 21st Century Visioning project will assist the Planning Commission by providing input and reaction to the various chapters of the plan as they are prepared.

The City and several consultants will prepare the planning document with input and direction from the public and the Advisory Panel. The Planning Commission will then review the documents and make recommendations to the City Council. The majority of the Comprehensive Plan sections will be drafted in 2007 with public reviews and hearings to occur early in 2008. A completed plan must be submitted to the Metropolitan Council by September 2008. View the Background Report here.
