Three Things to Check before Showing Your Home
Showing your home can be an exciting experience. You'll have strangers coming into the place that you've called "home" and they'll comment on it and decide if they want to buy it or not. But there are so many things to do to get ready for showing your home. If you don't take some time to make a list, you might not get everything done and you could have some problems getting someone to purchase it. Here is a list of the three main things you should check before showing your home to ensure the best possible chance for selling it.
Make sure it smells pleasant.
The smell of a home on the market will sometimes be the first thing potential buyers notice once they step inside. Pet smells, cat litter, or just an unpleasant odor could be a deal breaker if it's strong and noticeable. Luckily, you can make sure your house smells fresh before showing it. A few days before potential buyers visit your home, open all the windows and let the house air out. Also, place air fresheners throughout the house that emit a faint smell so it's not overpowering. Clean up any spots where your pets may have made a mess and cover it with pet deodorizer. Make sure the trash is taken out and there aren't any full ashtrays in the house, too. On the day of the showing, bake some cinnamon rolls in the oven to give your home that "homey" scent that so many homebuyers are looking for.
Clean it up.
If you're still living in your home and trying to sell it at the same time, make sure it's always clean when it's time to show it to potential buyers. They know it will be clean when you move out, but having a cluttered house distracts the eyes from other things that they should be noticing. Cluttered homes also make the rooms look smaller. Unfortunately, there aren't too many homebuyers looking for rooms that are smaller, so you want to make the rooms look as large as possible. This might mean that you have to rent a storage space or find somewhere to keep things that don't "fit" into the look you're trying to create, but it will help your home sell faster.
Give your home curb appeal.
When your home looks shabby from the outside, potential buyers might not even come inside. Break out your garden tools and trim up the lawn and make sure the grass is trimmed. Plant some flowers and shrubs around the building and put on a fresh coat of paint if it needs it. Making it look good on the outside will prevent buyers from simply driving by without even giving it a chance.
Selling a home isn't easy, especially in today's market. Homebuyers are picky and they have many options to choose from. Don't make your home forgettable. Make sure you make it the best it can be to get it off your hands quick.
